DO International is developing key programmes in Asia, the Caribbean and Iran.
In Asia and the Caribbean, DO International has long supported programmes which helped NGOs in several countries to provide employment training and small business start up opportunities for ex drug users and people in treatment. These programmes seek to break the cycle of drug use by providing employment and an economic future for marginalised men and women.
DO International has introduced street based health and social care programmes in five Caribbean Islands. Street based services meet active drug users in their environment and provide holistic care and support through dedicated drop in centres. This strategy, proven in Asia, enables drug users to stay healthy, access services and develop a platform from which to manage their individual lives. With the diffusion of HIV and Hepatitis C becoming a major public health issue in many developing countries, street based services are very effective in reducing the long term damage associated with drug use.
Since 2005 we actively work in Iran with a programme aimed at improving scope and quality of NGO drug services in Iran. We support service delivery of Iranian NGOs for marginalised drug using population and lead them to network among NGOs, with local governments and internationally, both outcomes and efforts.
In 2002 DO International started to support work in Afghanistan together with a local partner in Kabul, to introduce drug residential treatment, street outreach and community based responses with both treatment and prevention being the primary focus.
